Honest answers

Questions worth asking before you buy anything.

Including ours. Carbon accounting has enough jargon and enough vendors — here’s what we’d want to know if we were in your seat.

For a first Scope 1+2 screening — honestly, yes, and some companies should start there. Spreadsheets break down at three specific points: when an auditor asks you to trace a number back to its source document, when an emission factor updates and you need to know which figures used the old one, and when more than two people touch the file. If none of those apply to you yet, our free STARTER tier still beats a spreadsheet — but the spreadsheet isn’t wrong.
It depends on three things: revenue, where you sell, and what you make. California SB-253 applies if you do business in California and exceed $1B in global revenue. EU CBAM applies if your goods (steel, aluminium, cement, fertilisers, hydrogen) enter the EU — your importers carry the filing obligation, but they need your data. CSRD applies mainly to companies with significant EU operations. The free framework consultation in STARTER exists precisely to answer this question for your specific situation — before you spend anything.
Scope 1 is what you burn (fuel, fleet, process). Scope 2 is what you buy as energy (electricity, steam). Scope 3 is everything upstream and downstream — purchased goods, freight, travel, product use and disposal, across 15 defined categories. For most industrial companies, Scope 3 is 70–95% of the footprint, which is why it lives in PROFESSIONAL: it’s genuinely more work, involving supplier data and more methodology decisions. Starting free with Scope 1+2 is the standard, sensible sequence — not a limitation.
It means an independent assurance provider can trace any reported figure back through the chain: which activity record produced it, which source document supports that record, which emission factor (and which version) was applied, who entered it, and who approved it. That evidence trail is what assurance engagements sample against. If a platform can’t show that chain per figure, “audit-ready” is a slogan.
No — and be wary of any software vendor who says yes. Assurance only has value when it’s independent: the party who prepared the numbers cannot credibly verify them (auditors call this a self-review threat). ESGARD prepares your data and evidence trail; verification and assurance are performed by independent third-party providers you engage separately. We’ll happily introduce you to qualified partners, but the engagement — and the independence — is theirs.
For Scope 1+2: twelve months of utility bills, fuel purchases or fuel-card statements, and refrigerant service records if you have significant HVAC or process cooling. That’s typically enough to stand up a defensible baseline in days. ERP access improves it but isn’t required on day one. Scope 3 builds progressively — spend data first for screening, then activity and supplier data where it matters most.
No asterisks: STARTER gives you real Scope 1+2 measurement, one ERP integration, AI insights, and a framework consultation, free. Our reasoning is commercial, not charitable — companies that measure Scope 1+2 discover that Scope 3 is where their exposure lives, and regulated companies eventually need multi-framework reporting and assurance readiness. We’d rather earn that upgrade than gate the basics.
It’s yours. Activity data, calculations, factor versions, and the evidence trail export in standard formats at any time — including if you cancel. Regulators expect multi-year retention, so vendor lock-in on compliance records is a risk you shouldn’t accept from anyone, including us.
How pricing works

Start free. Scale to your footprint, not a sticker price.

STARTER is free — measure Scope 1 & 2 and get a framework consultation at no cost. Beyond that, carbon cost drivers vary wildly: legal entities, the ERPs in play, emissions volume, frameworks filed, and the level of assurance you need. A 20-minute scoping call gets you an accurate quote for PROFESSIONAL or ENTERPRISE.

Pays for itself

Most engagements offset their cost through avoided CBAM exposure, avoided SB-253 penalties (up to $500K/year) and captured IRA tax credits. Tax-credit eligibility requires separate legal and tax analysis and specific technical documentation.
